Cellular reaches 2 billion connections
The middle of September 05 saw a significant milestone reached in the cellular world as the total number of connections worldwide passed through 2 billion. According to our calculations this happened on Sunday 18th September. The growth rate is impressive - after clocking up 1 billion in 2002, 20 years after cellular was first launched, the 2nd billion came up in just 3 years.
Given the world has approximately 6.42 billion people, the mobile phone has now reached approximately 30% penetration of the global population. With the mobile phone increasingly becoming the centre of convergence, it is interesting to note that the Internet is now approaching the one billion user mark (15% penetration), and although it is actually older than the mobile phone, it only began commercialisation just over a decade ago. Logically, as mobile handset functionality grows and includes internet connectivity, there will be a point in the next decade where internet connectivity will begin to catch mobile connections again, though at present the growth of mobile is outsripping all other mediums.

Mitsubishi PocketProjector
I am confident that portable front-projection is going to be one of the break-out products this year. Look at this new Mitsubishi PocketProjector: weighing only 14 ounces, it can project an 800 by 600 pixel image that is 20 inches across from only one foot away (the ‘throw’). It’s a DLP system, which is arguably the best technology for projection (although there’s much to recommend LCD in certain scenarios), and uses an LED for its backlight. That means it won’t have a terribly bright lamp, but the LEDs will not only last ten times as long as a normal projector bulb, they’ll also be a lot more sturdy (good for something so easy to toss in a bag).
So think about it: while right now there isn’t a good interface between, say, a smartphone or PDA and the projector (it accepts VGA and s-video in), you’ll be able to roll into a coffee shop or something, pull out your PDA and battery-powered projector, and work with a 20-inch screen shining off the back of every passing barrista. I’m willing to haul around 14 extra ounces (and shell out $700) for that.

Philips presents rollable display prototype
Polymer Vision, a subsidiary of Philips, reports that they will present a portable consumer device with a "rollable display" at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, Germany, September 2-7. The prototype, called Readius, has a monochrome 5-inch QVGA display with four grey levels that can show maximum two images per second; colour screens with quick move images aren't possible yet.
The screen has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and a high contrast, so it’s also readable in bright daylight.
The display is only 100µm thin and when rolled up has it a diameter of only 7.5mm. It also keeps showing the last image on the screen when you turn off the device.
On the IFA-exhibition Polymer Vision wants to check the wishes of the consumers and demonstrate the adequacy of the technology for the mobile market. Polymer Vision doesn’t want to put this product on the market by themselves, but they are searching for partners and investors. The first devices with this technology should be on the market within 2 years.

Charge 2 Go – one AA battery equals another 3 hours of talk time
Charge 2 Go – one AA battery equals another 3 hours of talk time
September 7, 2005 The Charge 2 Go is a reusable cell phone charger that accepts a AA battery and gives up to three hours of additional talk time – and at US$24.99, it’s an insurance policy that most people can afford as AA batteries can be found anywhere in any part of the world. The tiny aluminium charger comes in silver, blue, red or black and sells with a variety of connectors to fit most popular cell phone models.
The problem of dying cell phone batteries has been addressed in the past with cumbersome and inefficient solutions. Disposable chargers and units using three or four batteries have offered less than one hour of talk time. For a fraction of the battery power, Charge 2 Go is able to offer far more talk and charge time, utilizing 87% battery efficiency. A rechargeable battery may also be used for maximum savings and a higher quality battery increases performance. The unit uses a single AA alkaline, lithium or rechargeable (NiCad) battery.
Charge 2 Go can be purchased via the web direct from the company or by a number of online distributors such as Herrington
